Chapter 29: Winston's POV

Winston's POV

"Not for me," I said.

My voice carried to the back of the ballroom, because Linnea's microphone was still on.

My mother looked at me.

"Winston."

"You did it for yourself. You've always done everything for yourself and told me it was for me."

"Darling..."

"Take her out," I said to the detective, and he did.

I stood in the middle of three hundred people and watched my mother walk through the doors with her back straight.

I did not follow.

At two in the morning the detective let me into the interview room for ten minutes.

He stood at the door with his arms folded.

My mother sat at a steel table in her silver dress with a paper cup of tea she had not touched.

Someone had taken her pearls.

Without them her neck looked thin and old, and I had never seen that before.

"There you are," she said. "I asked for you hours ago."

"I came as soon as they'd let me."

"They tell me I shouldn't talk to you. I told them you're my son."

"I know."

"Sit, darling."

I did not sit.

She noticed, and I saw her decide to let it go.

"You've been very dramatic tonight," she said.

"But it's finished now. A lawyer will make it all go away, and we'll say you were overwrought."

"Mother."

"We'll have Sunday dinner as always. We can begin again."

"Linnea is alive."

"Yes, and I'm glad. I'm glad for the boy's sake."

She sipped the tea and made a face.

"But you don't have to keep her. A woman like that will leave you again the moment it suits her."

I put both hands on the back of the chair, because they had started to shake.
