Chapter 18: Kyle Begs

Sam parked the truck one street over, and he and Bree went in through the alley and the back door.

I walked up my own front path alone with my phone in my hand and the record button already pressed.

Kyle stood up when he saw me.

He hadn't shaved.

His charcoal suit was creased across the knees, and he held out the grocery-store roses, and then lowered them.

"Willa."

"You're on my porch, Kyle."

"I know. I know I am." His voice cracked on it. "Can I sit with you? Please. Ten minutes."

I sat on the top step, as far from him as the step allowed.

He sat below me, which put his head lower than mine.

I had waited five years to see that.

"Say what you came to say."

"Preston's gone," he said. "He took the Gage Trust papers out of the lawyer's office and told me I wasn't a party to it. I read the draft on my phone this morning. I'm not in it, Will. My name isn't anywhere."

"You signed the paternity line."

"I signed the line that says the child is mine. It doesn't say I own anything."

I didn't say a word.

He rubbed his face with both hands.

"He's been planning it since before we met with Dad. He let me think I was the one. He let me think I was clever."

"You were the one who lied to me."

"Yes."

"Say it plainly."

"I lied to you." His breath shook. "I couldn't give you a baby, and I said it was you."
