Chapter 19: The Plan
Preston crossed the lawn with his hands open and his sunglasses pushed up into his sandy hair.
"Will. Kyle. I'm glad you're talking," he said. "Families should."
"Get off my grass," I said.
"It's Kyle's grass too, technically. The deed's a joint tenancy."
"Preston," Kyle said. He had gone grey. "Don't."
Preston looked at him fondly.
"You've been confessing on a porch. I can see it from here."
"I haven't."
"You have the face of a man who's emptied his pockets."
He turned back to me.
"Where's Bree?"
"I don't know who you mean."
"Will." He sighed, patient and warm. "She's twenty-three weeks along and a little unwell in the head. She left her building at four this morning without her phone. If something has happened to her, it'll be on you."
"She's in a safe place."
"Then I'd like her to come out of it."
"She's not coming back to you."
His smile stayed exactly where it was.
"You don't know what you're doing. You think you're protecting a girl. You're standing between a woman and the man who's about to make her baby the richest child in Allegheny County."
"The man who's about to make her a line item," I said.
His eyes went flat.
That was all, for a second, and then the smile came back.
"She told you that."
"She told me you said it."
"Sweetheart, anything I said in a car was a figure of speech."
"Then you won't mind a test."
"Dad wants a test," Kyle said, in a thin voice. "Preston, he'll see it Sunday anyway. Let it go."
"You really think I'm going to let it go?" Preston said, almost gently. "Kyle. I've spent two years on this. I carried your wife's boxes to her car. I sat through your Christmas."
