Chapter 21: After the Glass
Sam's POV
By nine the dining room was empty, and the housekeeper had mopped up the wine and swept the stem of the glass into a dustpan.
I found my father in the study with the green lamp on and no whisky.
He looked older than he had on Thursday.
"Shut the door," Harlan said.
I shut it.
"You were right about the lab, and I was a fool about Kyle."
"You're not a fool. You wanted it so much you stopped looking."
"That's the definition." He rubbed his eyes. "Sit, Sam. For once."
I sat in the leather chair across the desk.
It was the first time in eight years, and it still fit me wrong.
He took the thin folder out of the drawer, the one with the shares.
"The offer stands," he said. "It's stood since Thursday, and nobody has to leave anybody now. Controlling shares, tonight. The lease, the seat, the door."
"The clause is dead."
"Yes."
"Then the shares go to whoever you decide."
"To you."
"I'm not saying no," I said. "I have a price."
He leaned back.
"Name it."
"The clause comes out of the will tonight, in writing, with your lawyer in this house. No son has to hand you a grandchild to be a son."
"Done."
"Rutledge Development drops Kyle's divorce petition and signs a statement that Willa Garrick abandoned nothing. Every paper with the word abandonment on it goes in the fire."
"Done."
"The yard lease goes in my name for ten years, and the lawyer who changed my locks pays for the new ones."
