Chapter 4: The Anniversary Photo
My assistant walked in at six and found me sitting on a flour sack with my phone in both hands.
She was twenty-two and could laminate croissant dough faster than anyone I had ever hired.
She looked at me, then at Sam, then at the phone.
"Is it the statement?" she said. "It's all over the neighborhood page. I almost didn't come in."
"You came in."
"Somebody has to run the proof drawer." She hung her coat on its hook and stared at Sam. "Who's he?"
"Delivery," Sam said.
"He's my brother-in-law," I said. "He's leaving."
"I'm staying until the oven's hot," Sam said, and went to stand by the wall.
My assistant's eyebrows rose very slowly.
"Okay," she said. "Okay."
I stood up and brushed the flour off my knees.
The statement said we had separated in the spring.
It said I had disrupted a private celebration and that the family was concerned for my emotional health.
It was a good statement.
It had probably cost a lot of money.
But I had one thing his lawyers did not have, and it was sitting in my camera roll.
"Will you hold my phone?" I asked her. "I want to talk to everybody."
"Live?"
"Live."
She propped it on a stack of sheet pans and framed me against the shop window, where the morning was coming up grey over Penn Avenue.
I had four thousand followers.
They were mostly brides, neighbors and women who liked pictures of lemon tarts.
I pressed the button and watched the number go from zero to nine.
"Hi," I said. "I'm Willa. Most of you know me from the cakes."
Fourteen.
"Yesterday afternoon I delivered a cake to a party and found out my husband was not on a work trip. He was at a baby party for another woman. Today his company says we separated in the spring."
