Chapter 11: Free
Vanessa walked down the last of the path with the wine glass held out in front of her.
"Say it again," she said to Daniel. "Say it to her face, with me standing here."
Daniel turned around. "Van. Not here."
"Where, then? You told me in the car park at nine this morning. You told me in a car park, Daniel." Her voice climbed. "Then you made me walk in on your arm so your mother wouldn't have to explain it."
Up on the lawn, the smokers had stopped smoking.
More guests drifted out of the tent behind them, drawn by her voice.
"I'm sorry," Daniel said. "I am. But it's done."
"For her." Vanessa looked at me. "For a florist with a sugar daddy."
"Vanessa," I said. "Go back inside."
"Don't you tell me where to go." She came closer, her heels sinking into the grass. "He set an alarm for four in the morning last Tuesday. In our bed. I lay there and listened to him shave for you."
"I didn't invite him anywhere."
"You didn't have to." She laughed, high and ugly. "You've never had to ask for anything, have you? Men just hand it to you. And then you take the rest."
She threw the wine.
It hit me across the chest, cold, and ran down the front of my white shirt in a red sheet.
Someone on the lawn gasped. Someone else said, "Oh my God," with delight.
I looked down at myself.
I looked like I'd been stabbed.
Under the shirt, the chain with my ring on it was wet against my skin.
Daniel said, "Jesus, Vanessa."
I took a napkin out of my pocket, the cloth kind from the tables, and blotted my collar.
Then I held it out to her.
