I didn't answer him.
Holden read the two texts over my shoulder, picked up my plate, and put the last piece of black cod on it.
"He'll beg," he said. "In front of his whole board."
"Let him."
On the morning of Thursday the twenty-eighth of May, I did the boardroom flowers myself at seven.
I set three low bowls down the length of the white table.
White chrysanthemums. Nothing else.
Holden came in at a quarter to nine, looked at them, and laughed once under his breath.
"That's cruel," he said.
"It's a florist's opinion."
"Sit where you sat the first time."
"At your right hand."
"At my right hand."
He touched the ring on my finger, quickly.
"Where everyone can see it."
By nine the glass room was full.
Three of Rutherford's partners sat on our side of the table, and two lawyers at the end with blue folders stacked in front of them.
Across from us sat Zhang Group's seven board members, all in dark suits.
Margaret sat in the middle of them in black, her pearls on, her back straight.
Vanessa sat at the far end with her laptop open, in a cream suit, her pink diamond turned inward toward her palm.
