Chapter 27: Auntie's Sixtieth
I sent my reply, and I didn't show Holden until it had gone:
"I'll be there."
He read it and set my phone down on the blanket very gently.
On Saturday night the seafood restaurant in Richmond had hung red lanterns across its whole ceiling.
Twenty round tables with red cloths and lazy Susans.
A little stage at the front, with a karaoke screen and a gold longevity character as tall as a man.
My aunt stood at the door in a red silk dress, greeting every guest.
She saw me coming up the steps on Holden's arm, and her face did three things at once.
"Happy birthday, Auntie," I said, and gave her a red envelope with both hands, the way my mother taught me.
She took it.
She looked at Holden, at his suit, at my ring.
"Mr. Rutherford," she said. "You honour us."
"Your niece did your flowers," Holden said.
She turned and looked at the room.
Every table had a low bowl of red peonies and orange lilies, long life and good fortune, done that afternoon in my shop.
"You did these," she said.
"I did."
Her mouth trembled, and then she pressed it flat.
