Chapter 17: Christmas
"Knowing it isn't proving it," the detective said.
It was that same afternoon, in her office, with Abel beside me and the door shut.
I'd told her about the porch. The offer. The open car door.
She'd written down the offer word for word and had Abel sign it as a witness.
She hadn't written down the car door.
"A man sitting in his car isn't evidence," she said. "I believe you. A jury won't care."
"What about Fallon?"
"She came in this morning." The detective tapped her pen on the desk. "With a lawyer from New York who bills more an hour than I make a week. She said she was asleep on a pill. She said it over and over. Then they left."
"The gate log."
"Her lawyer says the guard's a disgruntled employee who printed it himself."
"He's not disgruntled. He's the happiest man I know."
"I need someone inside that house to say it," she said. "The nanny. The marshal. Him. One of them."
The nanny wouldn't.
I'd called her twice since Bridgeport, and both times she'd cried and said she couldn't lose the money.
