Chapter 32: October
It was a house.
An orange house by blue scribbled water, with a big yellow light drawn over the door, rays coming off it.
Four people stood in a row in front of it, holding hands.
She'd labeled every one of them in her enormous, wobbly capitals.
MAMA. ME. JOY. NANNY.
Junie was the smallest, in orange boots, with her mouth open, because she was always talking.
At the end of the row, taller than all of them, was a dog.
A huge black dog with a tail like a broom.
Underneath it she had printed:
BISKIT.
"She wanted a dog so badly," the nanny said. "Her father said no. So she drew the house we'd live in when we got one."
I couldn't speak.
Abel had come up the porch steps behind me.
He looked over my shoulder at the drawing for a long time.
Then he looked down at the lobby doormat, where Sarge was asleep on his back with all four legs in the air.
"Sergeant Biscuit," Abel said quietly.
"The boy named him that," I said. "Last October. He never saw this."
