Chapter 15: The Board Meeting

Imogen had told him to stay home, and Griffin had agreed in a voice he knew she did not believe.

At ten the next morning he walked into the Sutherland Corp boardroom on the forty-first floor.

He wore his ripped jeans, his cap, and a plain gray hoodie.

Twelve directors sat around a very long table.

The blog's photograph was up on the wall screen, six feet wide.

His own face was in it. He had never seen it from the outside, grinning like a fool at a girl in broken glasses.

Imogen stood at the head of the table in a gray suit, with her notebook shut in front of her.

She saw him, and her eyes closed for one second.

"Mr. Oakes," the chairman said, checking his watch. "This is a closed session."

"I'm in the photo," said Griffin.

Nobody said anything.

"I'm the cap." He pointed at the screen. "Left side. Looks happy."

The chairman checked his watch again.

"The motion before the board," he said, "is that Mrs. Oakes take a leave of absence until the company's dignity has been restored. She would also issue a statement that the woman in this photograph is not her."

"It is me," Imogen said. "I won't say it isn't."

"Then the leave."

"I know," she said. "I came to take it."

"No," said Griffin.

She turned her head.

"Mr. Oakes, this is not your..." the chairman began.

"Griffin," Imogen said, low. "Sit down."

"No, ma'am."

He pulled out the chair at the foot of the table and turned it around.

He stood behind it with his arms folded across its back, facing the whole board.

"I want to say three things. I'll be fast. I know you're busy."

The chairman checked his watch a third time.
