Chapter 24: A Place Near the Middle
The royal chair arrived at supper carrying Bram's spare cardigan.
He had hung it over a golden wolf head to reserve his place.
Deborah took the cardigan off and sat in the chair herself.
Bram looked betrayed.
"You said you didn't like it," he reminded her.
"I like winning."
Osric carried another ordinary chair to the middle of the table.
He set it beside mine, then went back for the bread.
There was no platform.
Sabine arrived with biscuits that had survived the journey this time.
She looked almost disappointed by their perfection.
Deborah broke one in half before putting it on her plate.
Sabine grinned and took the other half.
Bram tried to put his cardigan over Osric's new chair.
The king placed a loaf of bread on it before he could.
