Chapter 10: It Was Never the Wine
"What did you just say?" Hakon said.
"If they find us, you say I forced you," Joren said.
"No," Hakon said.
"Highness."
"No. I don't say that. I will never say that."
Joren rolled onto his back under him, and Hakon slid out and sat back on his heels.
The lamp was low.
Joren lay with his arm over his eyes.
His chest rose and fell, and the iron ring slid in the hollow of his throat.
"You don't know what's in the Charter," he said.
"I know what's in the Charter."
"You know the first two sections. Everyone does."
He took the arm away.
"You don't know section nine."
"Section nine is the Thief of the Line."
Joren went still.
"You know it?" Joren said.
"I'm the Crown Prince. I read the book in my first year."
"I asked my tutor what it meant. He said nobody had used it in three hundred years."
"Nobody has had to," Joren said.
"What does it say, Joren?" Hakon said.
"That a commoner who takes the heir's mark in secret is given to the Stone."
He said it evenly, as a lesson is said.
"That means death. The Council can do it in the open, or it can do it quietly, with a fall or a cup."
