Chapter 20: The Parapet
Joren walked out onto the east parapet at four in the morning, alone, for the first time in eleven years.
The wall was a hundred feet above the rocks, wide enough for two men abreast, with a waist-high stone rail along the sea side.
The third tower stood at its middle.
Below the tower the rail had been replaced.
The new stone was pale against the old, with a bright line of mortar around it.
He stopped in front of it and put both hands on the cold top.
The wind came up off the fjord and pulled at his coat.
He had told himself he would feel something here.
All he felt was the cold, and the sound of water far down in the dark.
At the back of his mind the bond held its long steady warmth, where Hakon slept in a bed a quarter mile away.
It was enough.
It was more than his father had ever had on this wall.
"They sealed it up the week after," said a voice behind him.
Joren turned.
King Ludvig stood at the head of the stair in a black coat, leaning on a stick, with the physician's arm under his elbow.
He waved the old man off.
"Go and sit. I can walk to the rail."
"Sire," the physician said.
"Go."
The physician went.
