Chapter 7: The Deal
The refectory at Moonward was a hall of long tables and tall windows.
On Monday at noon half of it was watching the Crown Prince eat.
Hakon ignored them.
He sat at the end of the table by the east window with a plate of roast pork and potatoes.
Elske Wexel sat across from him with a book open beside her bowl.
Joren stood at his shoulder, a pace behind, with his hands folded.
"I'll be quick," Elske said, without looking up. "Father doesn't know I'm here. He thinks I'm in the law library."
"Are you?"
"I was. It's quiet there, and nobody tells me what I'm for."
She turned a page.
"That mark on your hip. Is it a very bright belt buckle, or is it what I think it is?"
Hakon choked on a potato.
Behind him, Joren made a very small sound that might have been a cough.
"I didn't see anything on Friday night," Elske said.
"I'm telling you so you'll understand that I could have told Father, and I haven't."
