Chapter 9: The King's Wing
Hakon let Joren get as far as the foot of the tower stairs before he followed.
It was not spying.
He told himself so twice on the way across the dark academy yard.
He wore his coat and no scarf, and the cold came off the fjord.
The palace lights burned gold on the far hill.
He was the Crown Prince.
He could go where he liked in his father's house.
The guards at the palace gate saluted and did not ask him anything.
He took the servants' stair to the King's wing, because it was the way Joren would have gone.
At the top, in a long dim corridor lined with portraits, he found him.
Joren stood outside a tall door with his hands at his sides, not knocking.
He turned.
He looked at Hakon for a long moment, and did not look surprised.
"I told you to wait," Joren said.
"You told me you'd return the favour. You didn't say anything about leaving," Hakon said.
"It's the King's order."
"The King is my father," Hakon said. "Open the door."
It opened from the inside.
An old physician in a grey coat stood in the gap, with a basin in his hands.
"Your Highness," he said, startled. "Sworn Guard."
"Let them in," said a voice from the bed.
The room was warm and dim and smelled of camphor and woodsmoke.
King Ludvig lay propped against four pillows with a black shawl around his shoulders.
The hands on the coverlet were bones.
He had been a tall man.
Hakon had seen him eight weeks ago, at the start of term, and he had been thinner than at midsummer.
