Chapter 11: The Third Day

Larissa's POV

I woke with my head on Corbin's arm and a coat over my hips.

The cellar was gray with daylight from a vent high on the wall.

My shoulder didn't hurt.

It had hurt a little every day of my life without my noticing, and now it didn't, and I lay there feeling the hole where the ache had been.

"You're awake," Corbin said.

He was sitting against the wall with his shirt gone and his glove back on, watching me.

"How long have you been up?"

"Since four."

"You should have woken me."

"I wanted to look at you."

I sat up and pulled the coat around me.

Between us on the floor lay the torn flannel and the blue jacket and one of his boots, and I remembered all of it.

I wasn't sorry.

"You were going to tell me something before Saturday," I said. "It's Saturday."

"I know."

"So tell me."

He drew a breath.

"Larissa, I need to tell you about the river. About what I did."

Fists pounded the cellar door.

"Alpha!" It was Wynne. "Corbin, you need to come out right now."

He shut his eyes.

"Ask me tonight," he said. "Before the Hearing. Everything, I swear."

"That's twice you've put it off."

"I know that, too."

I picked up the jacket.

I was not going to be the kind of woman who stayed in a cellar waiting to be told.

The training yard behind the lodge was a flat square of packed snow, with the youth of all seven packs standing around it in a ring.

They were sixteen and seventeen, a few dozen of them, and they were watching a very large man in a Hunt jacket.

He was one of Brock's men.

I knew his face from the line in the hallway.
