Chapter 5: Bare Hands

I found him in the training hall on the ground floor, hitting a heavy bag with his left hand in its glove.

It was a long room with mats, a ring painted on the boards and one high window full of falling snow.

Corbin heard me at the door and didn't stop.

"You went to the roll," he said.

"I went to the roll."

"Wynne told me she ran out on you."

"She did. She said the river, and then she left." I walked in and stopped at the edge of the mat. "My uncle says he pulled me out of it. The old keeper didn't say yes."

Corbin put both hands flat on the bag and stood there with his head down.

"Who pulled me out?" I said.

"Your uncle says he did."

"That isn't what I asked."

"No."

He pushed off the bag and turned around.

"If I tell you here, tonight, every wolf in this lodge will see it on your face by dinner," he said. "Bernard is watching every door. You'll have the whole story before the Hearing. Not today."

"That's not good enough."

"I know."

I was angry, and there was nowhere for it to go.

He pulled a pair of focus mitts off a hook and tossed them across the mat.

I caught them, and I did not like that he knew what I wanted.

"No," I said. "You put them on."

He raised an eyebrow, but he put them on.

I stripped off the blue jacket, rolled up my sleeves and hit the right mitt so hard that the sound rang off the ceiling.
