Chapter 6: The Long Table

Forty Ashgrove wolves stood in the snow at the foot of the lodge steps, in their coats and boots, in rows.

None of them had shifted.

They didn't have to.

Uncle Bernard stood in front with his hands tucked in the pockets of his barn coat and a smile on his face.

"Sweetheart," he said, when I came out with Corbin and Wynne behind me. "I've been sick about it all night. Come home, and we'll sit down with a bowl of soup and sort it out."

"I'm not coming home."

"You're a struck wolf, Larissa. By law, you're a ward of your Alpha."

"By law, she's my guest until Sunday dawn," said Corbin.

"I'm not asking you to break your roof, Corbin." Bernard turned his head. "I'm asking the Muster to rule. I'd like it settled at the Long Table, tonight, before every Alpha here."

The other Alphas had come out onto the porch above us while he talked, and they were listening.

Corbin looked at me.

I nodded once.

"Tonight," Corbin said. "At supper."

Bernard touched two fingers to his forehead in a small salute and led his forty wolves down the drive.

I watched them go, and I thought about a typed paper dated last Tuesday.

The Long Table in the great hall seated seventy.

Seven Alphas sat at the head, one from each pack, with their betas standing behind their chairs.

Corbin took the host's chair at the center.

I stood at the foot of the table with my hands at my sides and my braid pulled tight.

The Alpha from the north pack, a stout woman with white hair, struck her glass with a spoon.

"The matter of Larissa Aldren," she said. "Bernard, you have the floor."
