Chapter 18: A Seat at the Table
Mara's POV
I came down the Hall's front steps in Ronan's flannel shirt and yesterday's skirt, with my hair still wet from his shower.
The gray-hatted Alpha stood in the yard beside a county sedan, holding his hat in both hands.
He bowed his head when he saw me.
"Please don't," I said. "Everyone does it, and I haven't had coffee."
"It's the custom, Ms. Linwood."
"It's early."
Ronan came out behind me and stopped on the top step.
The gray hat nodded to him, a short, correct nod, and I realized it was the nod one Alpha gave another.
"I've brought a letter," the gray hat said. "The Moot met again last night without you."
He held out a cream envelope with a wax seal.
I broke it and read.
It was one page in a careful hand.
The Moot had seen a human carry the Ridge's blood and put nine Alphas on their knees.
It offered the bearer a seat at the table for the thirty days of her trial.
"A seat," I said.
"A guest seat, with a vote on matters that touch the old and the sick."
"Why?"
"Because of the forty names," he said. "Three of those names were fathers of men at that table. We've never had anyone ask us a question about the lodges before. You asked it, and you wrote the answers down."
"I'm a caseworker."
"The valley has eleven care homes, Ms. Linwood. Faulk ran one. The rest were never inspected, because nobody who could inspect them was permitted in the room."
He turned the hat once in his hands.
"There's a condition."
