Chapter 9: Fire at the Border

I ran up the ridge behind Bram with my hair still wet and my dress stuck to my skin.

Blackwater's wolves were pouring out of the lodge below us, half-dressed, shouting to each other.

Bram shifted at the top of the path.

I had never watched an Alpha do it up close. He dropped to his knees, his back bowed, and his clothes tore, and then a huge dark grey wolf stood in the snow where he had been.

He looked at me once, golden-eyed, and bounded toward the fire.

I followed on foot.

The border post was a small timber watch hut with a signal fire on a platform beside it.

All of it was burning.

The roof was a sheet of flame, and sparks were whirling up over the river.

Three men were already there, beating at the walls with wet blankets.

One of them, a young watchman, was on his knees in the snow, tearing at his own hair.

"My boy," he screamed. "He was asleep in the back. He's in there."

The fire roared.

Two wolves tried the door and fell back from the heat. The smoke boiled out in black rolls.

Bram's wolf paced the wall, snarling, and I saw he couldn't fit through the narrow back window.

Nobody could. Nobody who wasn't small.

I didn't think about it.

I dropped Bram's coat in the snow, and I ran for the back of the hut.

"Luna!" somebody yelled.

I ducked my head and went through the window.

The heat hit me, and I braced for the pain.

It didn't come.

The air was thick and orange, and the beams over my head were glowing, and somehow I was not afraid.
