Chapter 10: The Dose

Cade's POV

Anson's office in Greaves Hall smelled of coffee and polished wood.

It had a chair set exactly where I was told to sit.

I had sat in that chair at sixteen, and at nineteen, and every year in between.

"Close the door," Anson said.

I closed it.

He poured two cups of coffee and set one in front of me.

I didn't touch it.

"You marked a servant girl in front of four hundred people," he said pleasantly.

"On a night when I had asked you for something simple."

"You asked me to take her to a car."

"I asked you to obey."

"I know what you asked."

He sat on the corner of his desk and looked at me with those warm hazel eyes.

I had trusted those eyes for ten years.

They had pulled me out of the burned-out ruins of my own pack when I was twelve.

"I'm raising your dose," Anson said.

"I'm already at the limit."

"Three white, two blue. Every day."

"That will put me on the floor."

"Good," he said gently. "The floor is where I need you for the next three weeks."

He opened a drawer and took out a small amber bottle, and he rolled it across the desk to me.

"Take the first ones here."

I shook three white pills and two blue into my palm and put them on my tongue.

I held them under it.

Anson watched my throat, and I swallowed nothing.

"Open," he said.
