Nobody on the road breathed.
Damon took one step toward her.
"Say that again."
"Your mother." Vivica's laugh had gone thin and ugly. "Five weeks in that hospital. The surgeon. The room with the view. Every cent of it."
"How?"
"Through her foundation. She called me a charity case." She smiled with my mouth. "She said it was the best money she ever spent."
A reporter said, "Holy God," very quietly.
Vivica pushed past the cameras to a waiting cab.
Nobody stopped her.
Every lens on the road had already swung back to Damon.
He turned to his head of security at the gate.
"Where is my mother right now?"
"Her spring luncheon, sir. The foundation committee. In the garden."
"How many?"
"About thirty."
Damon looked at me.
I looked down at his shirt and my bare legs.
"Bea," I said. "Do you have pants?"
"I have leggings in the trunk," Bea said. "Clean-ish. Don't ask about the ish."
Forty minutes later, Damon's car stopped in Helena Strade's drive behind a row of white Mercedes.
I was wearing his shirt knotted at the waist and Bea's black leggings, and my sandals.
The maid in gray opened the door and went pale.
