Chapter 20: Her Own Guests

"Vivica is unwell," Helena said.

Her voice came out of the speakers smooth and cool.

"She has been unwell since the accident. I took her in when no one else would. I paid for her care, yes, out of love." She turned her head toward the back of the room. "And that woman has spent a month turning my son against his own mother."

Nobody moved.

"She trapped him," Helena said. "She got herself pregnant in his garage, and when that wasn't enough, she went to the press. I was protecting my grandchild. Any grandmother in this room would have done the same."

Not one person in the ballroom nodded.

At the front table, the woman from the book club picked up her evening bag and stood.

Damon let go of my hand.

He walked out from table forty and up the center aisle between the tables.

He didn't hurry.

Three hundred people turned in their chairs to watch him pass.

Vivica was still standing in the aisle with the cushion on her hip.

He walked around her.

He went up the stage steps and stopped beside his mother at the podium.

She didn't step aside.

He reached past her and lifted the microphone off its stand.

"Good evening," he said. "I'm Damon Strade. Strade Holdings funds every dollar this foundation spends, including tonight."
