Chapter 11: Look After My Girl

The Costello Properties lobby on Park Avenue had a marble floor, a wall of glass and a front desk with three receptionists.

I came through the revolving door that Friday afternoon with my own lawyer beside me.

Porter was standing in the middle of the floor holding two dozen white lilies.

He had shaved. He wore the navy suit I had picked out for him in the spring.

He looked rested and sorry, and I knew how long it had taken him to arrange both.

A dozen people were crossing the lobby on their way to lunch. Several of them slowed down.

"Tash."

"I have a meeting," I said.

"Five minutes."

"My lawyer and I have a meeting."

"Five minutes," he said, softer. "Please."

My lawyer, a tall woman in a gray coat, glanced at me.

I nodded, and she moved to the desk and pretended to read her phone.

Porter stepped closer.

"I was wrong," he said. "I know I was wrong. I'd been up for three days, I was scared the deal would fall through, and I did something stupid. I want to make it right."

He held out the lilies.

I did not take them.

He lowered them and let out a short breath.

"You think I don't know what you did for me? Four years, Tash. I never said it. That's on me."

I waited.

"Byron Costello is using you," he said. "You know it, and you're too proud to say it. Come home. We'll start over."

"Porter."

"I've got something."

He took his phone out of his pocket.
