Chapter 13: Porter's iPhone

Natasha's POV

The emergency vote was called for nine on Monday, in the boardroom where I had taken Porter's budget apart.

Seven directors sat around the table.

Porter sat at the head with his lawyer at his elbow and a closed folder in front of him.

Byron sat on the far side. His jaw had gone yellow and purple, and nobody at the table had asked him about it.

Rhys sat near the middle and would not look at me.

In the corner chair by the window sat a small woman in a navy coat with a cane across her knees.

She had told the receptionist she was expected, and nobody had dared to check.

"This board meets to consider one motion," Porter said. "The removal of Miss Brennan from the Costello seat for an undisclosed conflict of interest."

His lawyer opened the folder and slid a photograph down the table.

It showed me on Byron's gravel drive with my hands in his collar and my mouth on his.

The directors passed it hand to hand.

"She has been in his bed since the first week," Porter said. "I trusted her for four years. I'm sorry to learn what she is."

I stood up.

"I'd like to speak before you vote."

"You have no standing," his lawyer said.

"Let the girl talk," the widow said from the corner.

The lawyer looked at Porter, and Porter said nothing.

I turned to the table.

"The photograph is real," I said. "I am sleeping with Byron Costello. It started Thursday night, after I took the seat, and our contract says that part is my call."

Someone coughed.

"That's the whole conflict. I'm telling you myself, in this room, with the door open."
