Chapter 10: Call Logs

The first reply came at 5:48 on Wednesday morning, from Lisbon.

I was on Megan's couch with my laptop, and I sat up so fast the blanket hit the floor.

Dear Ms. Farnsworth, please find attached the full change history for your reservation.

It was a plain PDF with a header and a table.

Megan came out of the bedroom in her robe with her hair flattened on one side.

"Is that it?"

"That's Lisbon."

She sat down next to me with a mug of coffee.

I made the PDF big on the screen.

The first line was my own booking, made on February 12. Hotel Alma Azul, three rooms, nine nights, paid by credit card ending in my numbers.

The second line was dated two days before our flight.

Changed by telephone. Rooms transferred to partner property. Caller identified as group coordinator, J. Merrin. Callback number on file.

The number was Joss's.

I did not need to check my contacts.

I knew it by heart, because I had called it every day for ten years.

"There it is," Megan said, very softly.

"There it is."

"Does it say why?"

"Cost saving, at the caller's request."

"Whose cost?"

"Mine."

She put her hand on my knee.

The second email arrived while we were still looking at the first.

Santa Fe.

The third came at six fifteen, and the fourth right behind it.

Mexico City, and Banff.

I opened each one and read down to the second line.

Changed by telephone. Caller identified as group coordinator, J. Merrin.

"Nashville didn't answer," I said.

"Give it a day."
