Chapter 14: Tribute

The Hollis Gallery had white walls, a hundred paper lanterns and four hundred people holding free wine.

I wore the green dress Megan picked, and I stood in the doorway with her arm hooked through mine.

On an easel by the entrance stood a poster the size of a door.

Joss Goes Presents: Lisbon in Three Days. Special guest, Carys Farnsworth.

My name was in gold script, below her face.

"I want to tear it down," I whispered.

"After," Megan said.

At the back of the room, behind the last row of folding chairs, Caleb stood beside his projector with a white sheet over something tall.

He didn't look at me.

Across the aisle, Jared leaned on a pillar in a dark jacket, with his hands in his pockets.

He did not look at me either.

A gallery manager with a headset came up and checked her tablet.

"Ms. Farnsworth? You're on the run of show for the video segment. Your waiver is on file."

"I never signed a waiver," I said.

"It has your signature."

"It has a signature."

She frowned at the tablet.

"Ms. Merrin's team uploaded it on the thirtieth of March," she said. "I'm not able to pull a segment now. We have sponsors in the room."

"Then don't pull it," I said.

Megan squeezed my arm hard.

"Let it play," I told the manager. "I want everyone to hear it."

She stared at me, and then she went away.

The lights dropped at seven.

Joss walked out onto the low stage in a cream dress and her camel coat, with gold hoops swinging, to loud applause.

She took the microphone off the stand and held it in both hands.

"Hi, everyone," she said. "Thank you for coming. Honestly, I'm shaking."

Somebody in the front row whistled.

"I'm a girl who talks to a phone for a living, so I never thought I'd have a room like this," Joss said. "But this guide is the most personal thing I've ever made. And I couldn't have made it without one person."
