Chapter 15: Musuem

"This is the original document for Day Four," I said into the microphone. "I wrote it in March."

Caleb scrolled it up the canvas, ten feet wide.

Every date down the right side was mine. March 9. March 11. March 14.

Under them, in gray, one line.

Joss Merrin viewed this document. March 30.

"That's the whole history," I said. "She viewed it once. She never typed a word in it."

"Carys, this is a private document," Joss said. She had stepped back from the stage edge, still smiling at the room. "I shared it with you as a friend."

"You were the viewer, Joss."

Caleb pulled up a second window and set it beside the first.

It was page nine of her paid guide, with the logo in the corner.

Day Four. The same morning walk. The same café on the corner. The same ticket-line trick I had spent nine hours working out.

The same sentence, too, in the same place.

Let the museum's side door be your secret.

Except that in both versions the word was spelled the same wrong way.

"Read the third line out loud," I said to the room. "Slowly."

A man in the front row squinted.

"The musuem," he said. "It says musuem."

"I spell that word wrong every time," I said. "So does her guide. Four thousand people paid thirty-nine dollars for my typo."

The laughter was small and shocked, and it spread.

Joss kept the smile on her face.

"Everybody makes typos," she said. "We had the same notes, because we traveled together. That is how friendship works, babe."

"Then explain this."

Caleb clicked, and four PDFs stacked down the canvas.

Lisbon. Santa Fe. Mexico City. Banff.

"I asked each of these hotels for the change history on my bookings," I said. "Every one of them has a phone change made two days before we arrived. Every one lists the caller as group coordinator, J. Merrin."
