Chapter 13: The Fire
By the time the sun cleared the pines, four of Timothy's six wolves had walked away from him.
Pat came back from the guest wing at a run with the three council Alphas behind her.
The old Alpha with the white braids went down on one knee beside the boy from the east border and put her palm on his chest.
He was breathing easily now, and she looked at Crispin's hand, still resting on the boy's shoulder, for a long time.
"Not here," Timothy said, in his warm voice again. "If the Luna means to accuse her Alpha, she will do it at the hearth, in the hall, with every wolf to witness. That is the old way."
"It is," said the old Alpha, and stood. "We'll go."
The hall filled in a quarter of an hour.
Wolves stood along the walls and sat on the long benches where I had eaten my wedding breakfast.
The fire in the great hearth had been lit that morning for the banquet guests, and nobody had put it out.
The three council Alphas took the bench on the left.
The old record-keeper came in last, leaning on Pat's arm, with the birth ledger held against her chest.
Dinah slipped in behind them and stood near the door with her hands knotted in her cardigan.
She met my eyes and nodded once.
Crispin stood a step behind my shoulder.
I could feel him there without turning, and my shoulder was warm.
"Speak, Luna," the old Alpha said. "Timothy Ramsay, you will stand at the fire and answer."
I told it plainly.
The wedding night, the dark room, the print under the window, the eleven letters stamped Not yet.
The old record-keeper laid the ledger on the table and turned it so the council could read.
