Chapter 17: The Stone
Lena's POV
I walked up the drive of my husband's house at midnight with Timothy's note in my fist.
Six wolves stood on the porch in a line, with the lamp behind them.
None of them would look at me.
I knew every one of them by name, and three had come to my last birthday dinner.
"Luna," said the one at the top of the steps. "The Alpha says you've come home."
"The Alpha says a lot of things," I said. "Tell him I'm here."
A window slid up on the second floor.
Timothy leaned out of it in his shirtsleeves, with his silver beard unbrushed and his face for once unarranged.
"My dear," he said. "You came."
"You wrote me a note."
"I did. Step inside, take your old room, say nothing at the moon tomorrow, and you will have your stone and your pack. Rooke can go north on his own legs, and all of this can be forgotten."
"It can't."
"Everything can be forgotten if enough people want it."
I stood at the bottom of the steps and made myself talk slowly, because Pat had told me what to do if I couldn't think of anything else.
Keep him talking.
"Why did you let me write the letters?" I said. "You could have burned them the first week."
"Because you would have written again."
"That's not an answer."
"It is the only one you'll get." He leaned out farther. "You wanted to go home, Lena. I gave you a home. A large one. You had your own garden."
"I had a husband who wouldn't look at my shoulder."
Behind the house, in the dark of the garden, somebody coughed.
