Chapter 10: Four Years of Mail

Eli's POV

Brianna read the first paragraph of letter nine and got it almost right.

I held the phone between my knees on the roof and watched her do it.

She had the cadence of somebody who had practiced in a mirror.

Beside me, T. did not make a sound.

Brianna turned the page of the blue notebook.

"'Nan stirred the pot and her hands shook,'" she read, "'and I thought, one day I'll be the one holding the spoon for her. And Eli, I thought of you, because you're the only person who would understand why that made me laugh.'"

I felt my jaw tighten.

That was not in the letter.

There was no *Eli, I thought of you* anywhere on that page.

T. had never written me a line that tried to make me feel something.

She told me about her days, and I filled in the rest myself.

"She's adding to it," T. said, very quietly.

"I know."

"She wrote a better line than I did."

"She didn't," I said. "It's not a better line. It's a line that wants something."

T. gave a short, surprised breath.

I did not look at her, because I was afraid of what my face was doing.

Under the screen, the comment count was climbing.

*She's so brave.* *T. is a queen.* *Eli better marry this girl.*

I handed the phone to the tour manager, who had climbed up the ladder behind us with a headset hanging off his neck.
