Chapter 11: The File
Louisa's POV
"Nan, I'll call you back," I said.
"Louisa, who is that man?"
"Eli. The singer. I'll explain." My voice came out thin. "I love you."
I ended the call and stood up on the loading bay concrete, holding my phone against my ribs.
"How do you know my last name?" I said.
Eli didn't move.
"You told me no names," I said. "You agreed. You stood in front of me yesterday and promised."
"I know."
"I never said it. Not on the stage, not at the stage door, not once. Nobody on this tour has heard it from me." I could hear my own pulse. "How do you know it?"
"It's in a folder in my bag," he said. "It has been for three years."
"What is?"
"Your name, and the street you live on. A photograph."
The ground felt tilted.
"You had someone look into me," I said.
"Yes."
"For how long did they watch me?"
"Three weeks."
"And you never said a word."
"I shut it, and I never used it." His face was gray in the early light. "I didn't know how to give it back."
"Keeping it shut isn't a favor. That's a stalker with good manners."
He flinched.
I had meant it to hurt.
"Show me," I said.
He went up the bus steps and came back with a gray folder.
He held it out with both hands.
I took it and sat down on the concrete step, because I did not trust my knees.
The first page had my name typed across the top.
There was my address, my age, the name of my clinic.
Clipped under it was a photograph of me crouched in the front yard of my old rental, with Biscuit in my lap.
I had on my green scrubs, and my hair was in a ridiculous braid.
