Chapter 5: Declined

I slept four hours in a hostel bunk with my bag under my head.

At eight I sat up and opened my banking app.

The spare card I kept for emergencies had been in Connor's phone wallet for a year.

I had never minded, because he was my boyfriend.

Yesterday it had charged a rental car, a tailor and a bottle of wine at a hotel bar.

The total was $641.

I froze the card.

Then I walked to the hotel where the tour's VIP block was staying, because it was the only place in Lisbon where I knew exactly where Connor would be.

He was at the fan club breakfast.

I could see him through the glass wall of the hotel restaurant, from a lobby chair with a cup of tea I had paid for myself.

Thirty people sat at long tables with pastries and name cards.

Brianna was at the head, in a white blouse, signing a poster for a girl with braces.

Connor stood beside her with his hand on the back of her chair.

Nobody had to tell me what that meant.

Nobody in that room thought he was her friend's boyfriend.

A man in a headset, whom everyone treated as the tour manager, was walking the tables with a clipboard.

At nine-fifteen the waiter brought the bill for the whole table to Connor, because Connor had waved at him and said, "Put it on mine."

He said it loudly enough for the room to hear.

He took out his phone and tapped it on the reader.

The reader beeped twice.

The waiter said something quietly.

Connor tapped again.

Beep, beep.

"Try it once more," Connor said, louder. He was smiling at the table. "It does this when I travel."
