Chapter 18: The Watch
On Sunday afternoon Helen went to meet the reporter from the Courier, and she asked me to sit with her husband.
"Just an hour," she said, with her handbag already on her arm. "He likes you."
"What do I do?"
"Nothing. He's wonderful at nothing."
So I sat in the sunroom with Anders's father, in the wicker chair beside his wheelchair, with a view of the roses and a plate of lemon tart between us.
He ate the tart with his good hand. He did not offer me any, and I did not mind.
Outside, a gardener was working on the hedge, and the room smelled of warm glass.
For ten minutes he looked at me and I looked at the garden.
Then he lifted his hand and pointed at a small drawer in the table by the window.
"Open it?" I said.
He nodded.
Inside was a pocket watch on a short gold chain. The glass was scratched, and the case was worn smooth at the edges.
I held it up, and he nodded again.
"This is yours?"
"Carrow," he said. It took him a long time to get the two syllables out, and I waited. "Watch."
"Do you want me to wind it?"
He shook his head and closed his hand around mine, around the watch.
"First," he said.
"First what?"
"First. You."
I understood him slowly, and I did not like it.
"No," I said. "Thank you, but no. It should go to Anders, or Helen. I don't go first. It's a whole thing."
He laughed.
It was the wet, helpless laugh I had heard at the table, and he went on until he had to pat his chest.
