Chapter 22: A Napkin
The woman in the navy suit walked up the steps to the stage with her lanyard swinging.
She took the microphone from the emcee, who let her.
"Good evening," she said. "I'm the county clerk. Mrs. Carrow's lawyer asked me to bring the file, and I came for the shrimp on my own."
A few people laughed. Tobin did not.
She opened a folder and read from it in a flat, pleasant voice that carried across the ballroom.
"The marriage license was issued on the day of the wedding to Anders Carrow and Leonie Salminen. The register was signed by both of them and by the officiant. That is the document the county records."
"The application!" Tobin said. "It has my name!"
"Mr. Carrow, I have your application right here."
She held up a single sheet. On the big screen, the camera zoomed in on it, and the whole ballroom saw the groom's line and the loose scrawl.
"Page two requires a signature," said the clerk. "Yours is missing."
Tobin stared at the page.
"The county does not accept an application nobody signed," she said. "We set it aside. If you hand me a page with no signature, I have a napkin."
The whole ballroom groaned.
"But the lawyer filed it," said Tobin, weakly.
"The lawyer filed the register," said the small gray man from the front row, standing up. "I told you that you could ask me, Mr. Carrow. You asked Bree."
I got up from the wings and walked out.
Nobody had called me, and I went second, behind the clerk, and it felt like the right place.
I took a folded sheet of hotel notepaper from my clutch, and gave it to Anders, who had followed me out.
"Read it," I said.
He unfolded it, and read it aloud into the microphone, in the steady voice he used for everything.
