On Wednesday morning Nico's kitchen smelled of burnt toast and four men trying not to say what they were thinking.
Aldo's text lay face up on the table between the coffee cups, where it had lain since Saturday night.
Thursday, four o'clock.
"We don't have to go," Marco said.
"I'm going."
"Gemma."
"He wants it settled at table," I said. "So do I."
Dario put his chin on his fist. "Forty people, a turkey, and a Chicago mobster. I've had worse Thanksgivings."
"You haven't," Luca said.
"No. I haven't."
Nico had his laptop open next to a plate he hadn't touched, and he was chewing the corner of his thumb.
"If you stand up and read the account, he'll say it's a fiction," he said. "He'll say it's a boy's diary."
"It's your handwriting, in your ledger, with the dates."
"It's still mine. He'll say I'm the family's fool." His ears went red. "I want a witness who doesn't love us."
