Chapter 19: The Green Book
Nico lifted me onto his desk and turned the ledger around to face me.
The late morning sun came through the window and lay across the open pages in a long gold bar.
"Read the right-hand side," he said.
"I couldn't. I tried."
"Try now. I'll hold you."
He stood between my knees with his hands on my waist, warm through my shirt.
I looked at the page.
At the top of the right-hand column, in the same small square writing, was a single word.
Received.
Under it, beside the first line of the first month, he had written: She ate half the soup. Luca stayed until she slept.
I read the next line.
She laughed at Dario's joke. Dario went home happy.
I read the next.
She asked me to keep a secret and I kept it. It is the best thing I have ever been given.
My throat closed.
"Seven years," Nico said, very softly. "Eighty-four lines. I never wrote what you cost, Gem. I wrote what you gave us."
I turned the page and the next one and the next.
Every month had a line.
Month thirty-one: She wore the red dress to the Fourth of July. I had to leave the room.
"Nico," I said.
"I'm going to say it badly."
"Say it."
"You cost us nothing." He took a pen from the blotter and uncapped it. "Give me your leg."
My whole body went still.
"Nico, what are you doing?"
"Writing it down. Once, in the right place."
I lay back across the desk with my elbows on the blotter, and he pushed my skirt up my thighs.
He drew my underwear down and off, slowly, and tossed it onto the ledger.
"Hey," I said.
"Sorry." He laughed, and his ears went pink. "Wrong page."
He moved it.
Then he put one hand on the inside of my thigh, spread my knees wide, and bent over me with the pen.
The nib was cool and light on my skin.
It moved in a slow curve, and I felt every stroke.
The ink dried cold on the tender flesh, a few inches from where I wanted him most.
He drew a letter and then another line beside it.
When he lifted the pen I looked down.
