Chapter 32: The Black Cliff
Maudie did my hair.
She sat me on the end of her bed in our old room, for the last time.
Then she pulled a comb through my hair.
"Up?" she asked.
"Down."
"Pearls?"
"Gods, no."
"Veil?"
I looked at her in the little mirror.
She grinned. "I was joking."
She left it loose down my back. Then she tied the blue scarf around my neck, over the two small marks, and stepped back to look.
I was wearing a plain white dress her mother might have liked. My scar showed.
"There," Maudie said. "You look like yourself."
"Is that good?"
"It's the best one." She sniffed. "Don't make me cry. My face goes like a tomato."
My father was waiting at the foot of the cliff path at moonrise, in his plain coat, with his cane.
He looked at me for a long moment.
"Your mother wore her hair like that," he said, "the first time I met her. She'd been out riding without asking."
