Chapter 12: Mine
I played the first file for Wade on his own laptop, in the truck, behind the lumber yard.
I watched his face while he watched us.
It was the couch, the lamp light, my body under his hands, and every angle was clear.
The sound came through the tiny speaker, my own voice saying his name.
He didn't blink.
When the clip ended, he closed the laptop and sat with his palms flat on the lid.
"Your mother," he said.
"Yes."
"Julian."
"Yes."
"Seven weeks," he said. "I told you I loved you in that truck, and she had a camera on my face."
His voice was very quiet.
That was worse than shouting.
"She wanted the house and the firm," I said. "The prenup. If you cheat, you lose both."
"I know what the prenup says." He laughed once, ugly. "I signed it. I thought she was being careful."
He opened the door.
He got out and stood in the gravel, one hand on the roof of the truck, staring across the yard at nothing.
I climbed out and went around to him.
"I should go," he said. "Right now. I should drive to the lake house and not come back."
