Chapter 7: Closed Door
My mother noticed first.
She noticed over coffee on Sunday morning, with her laptop open and her reading glasses pushed into her blonde hair.
"You look different," she said.
I froze with the cereal spoon halfway to my mouth.
"Good different," she said. "Lighter. Whatever Dr. Thorsby is doing, it's working."
"I guess."
"What does he say to you in there?"
It was a casual question.
She asked it while scrolling through listings, not looking up.
"Normal stuff," I said. "Communication. Boundaries."
"Does he ever say anything about me?"
"No. Why?"
"No reason." She smiled at her screen. "I just like to know my money is going somewhere."
She sipped her coffee.
Wade came into the kitchen with his work boots in his hand.
She looked up and smiled at him, warm and easy.
"Morning, honey."
"Morning," he said.
He didn't look at me.
I felt a flicker of unease and pushed it down.
On Monday night Wade was out at a job site in Westerville until eleven, pouring a slab for a client with a deadline.
My phone buzzed at eight forty.
It was a number I didn't know.
Change of venue. 1180 Ashgrove Lane. Nine o'clock. Come alone.
