Chapter 6: Thin Ice

Aspen Hollow sat in a valley two hours west of Denver, and the road up to it was glazed with ice.

I had driven it a hundred times.

Rafe had never seen it.

He stood at the iron gates in his dark coat, his breath clouding, and read the carved stone sign twice.

MOONHOUSE, ASPEN HOLLOW. NEUTRAL GROUND. NO BLADES, NO CLAIMS, NO BLOOD.

"You built this," he said.

"I paid for it. A great many people built it."

"Linnet."

"Ms. Averill."

"Ms. Averill," he said. "You built this, and I sat across from you every Sunday and told you about my day."

"You did tell me a lot about your day."

He almost laughed, and then he stopped himself.

I walked him through the main lodge first.

It had a long stone hall with a fire at each end.

A hundred doors opened onto it, and every one locked from the inside only.

No guest could ever be cornered.

Each shift suite had a padded floor and a drain.

The steel cage door stayed open, and there was a shower on a timer.

"The first night they shift, a lot of wolves wake up in a strange bed," I said. "Here the door's already open, and so is the closet with the clothes."

Rafe ran his thumb along the edge of the cage door.

"Whoever designed this knew what it's like to wake up scared," he said.
