Chapter 12: Back to the Fence

I told Aldric to stay behind the trucks, and for once he listened.

"You gave me your word," I said. "Hold the army back. Let me go to them first."

"If a single wolf raises a hand to you," he said.

"They won't."

"If one does," he said, and left it there.

The general put a hand on my shoulder as I went, light and rough.

"We're right behind you," she said.

I walked out onto the road alone, in the cold, with the whole camp at my back.

Ironwood was coming up the hill in a long, ragged line.

Dad walked at the front in his work coat, with a hunting knife on his belt that I had never seen him carry.

Lester walked beside him with one hand resting lightly on his arm.

Behind them came sixty wolves, grim and silent, and at the very back, five young men with ink on their hands.

My brothers were not in step with the line.

They kept dropping a pace behind, and one of the twins kept looking down at his phone.

They saw me and every one of them went still.

I stopped in the middle of the road, just short of my father.

"Dad," I said, and my voice carried.

He stopped.

"I told you to keep that girl in the camp," Lester said, loudly and kindly, to the wolves behind him. "She's their spy. Look, the King sent her back so we'd let our guard down."
