Chapter 13: Count Them

Lester's smile came back slowly, one corner at a time.

"She was a stray," he said. "That's all I meant, Glenn. A stray the King's people sent through our fence to soften us up."

"A stray who knows Ellis's secret," Ellis said. "A stray who knew your jam labels, Lester."

"A stray who's been in the King's tent for three days," Lester said, louder, to the wolves behind him. "And now she's his daughter. Think about that."

Some of them did.

I saw it go down the line, a stiffening, a shift of boots on the gravel.

Dad stood very still in the middle of the road.

He looked at Aldric, and at my brothers, and at me, and I could see him trying to reach something and failing.

"Nobody takes a girl off Ironwood land," he said. "Not on a stranger's word."

"She walked out of your gate on her own feet," Aldric said. "Ninety-one of your wolves watched her do it."

"She's a pack girl, and he carried her off," Lester said.

"I walked out myself," I said. "Dad, you were standing right there. You almost said no."

Dad's eyes came to me, and stayed.

"I did," he said slowly. "I remember that. I don't know why I remember it."

Aldric took one step forward, and sixty wolves put their hands to their belts.

"Don't," I said, to both sides, and I stepped between them.
