Chapter 14: The Drawer

Dad bent down and picked up the tin cup from the gravel.

He looked at it for a long moment, and then he looked at Mom, who was still staring at her own hand.

"Nobody fights on this road until sundown," he said.

Lester's head came around. "Glenn."

"I said nobody." Dad's voice was low and flat, and every wolf in the line heard the Alpha in it. "Your King can keep his army at the fence. The girl comes down to my house with my wife and my son, and she tells us the rest at my kitchen table."

"Under your word?" Aldric said.

"Under mine," Dad said. "And you'll give me yours."

Aldric looked at him for a long, hard moment.

"You have it," he said. "I'll be at the fence at sundown. If she isn't there, I come in."

"Fair," Dad said.

It was the first time he had spoken to the King as a man and not an army.

Lester stepped forward with his kind face fixed in place.

"I'll walk with you, Glenn. You shouldn't be alone with her."

"Hold the line, Lester," Dad said, without turning his head. "Sixty wolves are standing in a road with their hands on their knives. Somebody has to keep them from using them."

It was an order, and Lester took it.

I watched him step back, with his hands open and his jaw tight.

He wore his old brown coat, the one he wore every winter, with the top button missing and the thread hanging loose.

I had never given it a thought before.

Mom hadn't let go of my hand since the cup fell.

She walked me down to the house like that, gently, the way she would walk a stranger's child, and she didn't say a word until we were inside.

Then she stopped in the front hall and frowned.
