They Borrowed My Surgery Fund To Leave Me Behind novel · Chapter 1 of 24

Chapter 1: The Printout

Mara learns her heart will not wait, her surgery fund is gone, and a stranger at her door says he was told she was dead.

My doctor slapped the test results onto her desk so hard the pen cup jumped.

"It's worse, Mara," she said. "Your valve is leaking more than it did in March."

A nurse in the doorway stopped filling out a chart and looked at the floor.

"You need to be admitted within two weeks. The hospital needs the full deposit before they schedule you. That's seventy-two thousand dollars."

"I have it," I said.

It was the truth, mostly.

I had saved it over three years, one diner shift and one tutoring session at a time.

"It's out on loan," I said. "I get it back on Friday."

The doctor took her glasses off.

"You lent out your surgery money."

"For two weeks. My boyfriend asked. He said he'd stake his life on it."

She did not answer that.

She pushed a folder across the desk and said, "Call the financial office today. Not Friday. Today."

I walked out through the same hallway where Tripp had filmed me last spring.

He had held up his phone and said, "Smile, babe, for the memory."

I had smiled.

In the parking garage I opened my bank app and stood there with the engine off.

The balance was four hundred twelve dollars.

I scrolled up through the last two weeks.

There were four transfers in four days.

Three small ones added up to nine thousand four hundred dollars, and one large one was seventy-two thousand.

All four had gone to the same place: Halyard Labs LLC.

That was the company Tripp had started with the three friends I grew up with in Marietta.

Wyatt had asked first. He said Halyard had a cash-flow problem and he needed four thousand until a client paid.

Caleb asked next. His mother was in the hospital, he said, and he had to cover her bills.

Nolan told me he had fallen behind on his credit card and was too ashamed to ask his parents.

Tripp asked last, the night before they flew out.

He had kissed my forehead and said, "Two weeks. I won't let this delay your surgery."

I had signed the transfer myself.

Four people had needed money in the same week for four different reasons.

I had not let myself think about that.

My phone buzzed. It was Tripp.

"Hey babe. Landed fine. The money's safe, I swear. Back Friday, I'd stake my life on it. Don't stress your heart."

He had never said that sentence before I gave him the money.

He had said it three times since.

A second message followed, a photo.

It showed a long wooden table in a restaurant with a view of the Tagus river.

Tripp, Wyatt, Caleb and Nolan sat in a row with champagne glasses.

At the far end was an empty chair with a white place card and a lit candle on the plate.

The card said MARA.

Under it Tripp had typed: "Saved your seat. Next trip, I promise."

I thought it was sweet for about as long as it took to breathe in.

Then I called him.

It rang four times and went to voicemail.

I called Wyatt. Voicemail.

I called Caleb. Voicemail.

I called Nolan, and it did not even ring.

I typed Halyard Labs into my phone.

The first result was a news post from that morning.

HALYARD LABS CLOSES $1.8 MILLION SEED ROUND.

Under the headline was the same photo, cropped tighter, without the candle.

Tripp was quoted in the third paragraph.

"Halyard is for the person who taught me what time is worth."

I read it again.

The round had closed on Tuesday, two days after they flew out.

Tripp had still been texting me good-night then, and calling me babe.

The table on the Tagus had been paid for with my money.

I sat with both hands on the steering wheel and my heart going too fast, and I made myself breathe slowly the way my doctor taught me.

Nobody was coming to save me.

Friday was not going to bring the money back.

So I decided I would take it back myself.

I called the hospital's financial office and told the woman who answered that I would be there on the fourteenth with the full deposit.

She said, "Ms. Ostrow, that's very soon."

"I know," I said. "I'll be there."

Then I started a list on my phone of everything I could prove.

The transfers. The dates. Tripp's texts. The photo with the candle.

It was almost midnight when someone knocked on my apartment door.

I looked through the peephole.

A man stood in the hallway in a navy overcoat, one hand holding a phone, his face pale under the light.

I opened the door on the chain.

"Mara Ostrow?" he said.

"Who's asking?"

"My name is Ezra Vogel. I'm so sorry to come this late." He swallowed. "I was told you were dead."
