Chapter 12: Maureen
"From her hand," I said. "She wore it every day for twenty years."
The light buzzed.
Rafe didn't move.
"My name was Philippa Rooney," I said. "She called me Pip. I changed it to Megan Dell at nineteen, because everyone in my town said my mother had jumped off a roof."
"She was your mother."
"Maureen Rooney was my mother."
His face had no color at all.
I took out my phone and held up the photograph of the page.
He read it.
I watched his eyes go down the lines, and stop, and go down them again.
Mr. C's boy. Left kidney. Not telling Pip.
He read it a third time.
Then he put one hand over his mouth, and I saw the hand shake.
"The eighteenth," he said through his fingers. "It's my birthday." He lowered his hand. "I told you at dinner, I told a room of eighty people, that I was grateful to a stranger."
"I know."
"You stood there and clinked a glass with me," he said.
"I know."
"Why didn't you..."
"Say it? In front of the donor families? On the roof?" My voice cracked. "On the roof, I was twenty feet from where they left her."
He flinched.
"My father paid her," he said.
"Four hundred thousand. Into an account for my tuition, through the Foundation. I've been a Corliss scholarship girl since the week she died." I laughed, ugly. "Every class I ever took. Every lab. It's why I'm a surgeon. It's why I'm standing here."
"She was dead before they told you."
"She bled out on that table." I pointed at it. "Or on the one by the wall. I don't know yet. Somebody's hand slipped, I don't know whose. She went into that operating room alive. By dawn she was on the roof of the parking deck, and the hospital had written her up in six lines."
