Megan's POV

On Monday morning the B-wing had its door open for the first time in fourteen years.

Someone had swept the corridor.

The gurneys with their gray sheets were gone.

A maintenance crew had cleared the plaster dust and washed the old windows.

Light came in from the courtyard and lay on the floor in long yellow squares.

I stood at the mouth of the hall with Rafe on one side of me and Gran, on her cane, on the other.

Down the hall, where the double doors of OR 4 stood, a man on a ladder was fixing a brass plate to the wall.

I couldn't read it from there.

"You don't have to go down," Rafe said.

"I do."

"I know. I'm only saying it's allowed to be slow."

I walked.

The brass plate was polished and the screws were new.

MAUREEN ROONEY WING.

Operating-room nurse. Corliss Memorial, sixteen years.

Below, in smaller letters: She did not fall.

I read it three times.

Then I put my hand over my mouth and sat down on the clean floor in my good suit.
