Chapter 22: An Ordinary Gift
The sword cost Ji forty copper, which was every copper she had saved.
The scabbard seller threw in his finest empty scabbard for nothing.
He wore the look of a man who would tell this story for years.
It was plain iron, with a leather-wrapped grip and no silver anywhere.
He had hung it in the back of his stall for six winters because nobody had wanted it.
Ji carried it home in its finest empty scabbard, held across both hands like a tray of tea.
She had planned the presentation for three nights.
She had imagined the speech, and the bow, and the quiet.
She had imagined Shen's eyes widening at the weight.
What she had not imagined was Shen opening the door while holding a half-peeled squash.
"Master," Ji said, and bowed too low, and the tip of the scabbard knocked the squash into the porridge pot.
"I brought you something," she finished.
