Chapter 10: The Board

"Mom, listen," I said. "Don't open the door. A man named Rocco is coming to get you."

Alessio had already taken the keys from the hook.

"Two cars," he told Rocco. "Bring her mother here and put a man on her street."

Rocco was gone before I hung up.

"Where are you going?" I asked.

"The hospital board is holding a breakfast at ten." He held out his hand. "You're coming with me."

"They'll tear me apart in front of the cameras."

"Good. Let them do it where I can see."

The hospital lobby was full of cameras.

The board breakfast was in the glass atrium on the second floor, with white tablecloths and a podium.

Alessio walked in beside me in a black suit, and the room went quiet, table by table.

The board chair stood up from his seat at the head table.

I had met him four times, and he had never looked at me the way he did now.

"Dr. Finley. You have no business here."

"I'm here to speak," I said.

"You've been dismissed."

"By a man who signed my medical record over to the press this morning."

Murmurs ran through the tables.

A reporter by the wall lifted a camera.

"I was twenty-two," I said, loudly enough for the back row. "My father died, and I did not sleep for a week. I was in a hospital for three nights, and I went back to school after."

Nobody coughed.

"I'm not ashamed of it. I'd do it again, because I wanted to be a doctor who didn't lie about being tired."

The chair stepped around the table.

"What matters," he said, "is the data."

"Then look at it. Order an independent audit of Dr. Schultz's raw files, the server and the original notebooks. Both sets."

"That's out of the question."
